Election judges work as a team of community members to run a polling place on Election Day. You cycle through a variety of roles throughout the day: greeting voters, helping voters register, checking registered voters in, explaining how to mark a ballot, and more. If you speak a language in addition to English, you may be able to provide language support to voters who need it.
Who can apply?
High school student age 16 or older
Resident of Hennepin, Anoka, Carver, Dakota, Ramsey, Scott, Sherburne, or Wright County.
You’ll need a parent or guardian to sign the permission form if you are under 18. If you serve during the school year, your principal will need to approve as well after you are trained. Currently, we work with coordinators at many area high schools, but students from any educational program or youth group may sign up.
What is the time commitment?
Attend a three-hour training course.
Choose a shift to work on Election Day:
Full day (6 am to 10 pm)
Opening (6 am to 2 pm)
Closing (2 pm to 10 pm)
Where will I work?
Minneapolis Elections & Voter Services staffs 134 polling places in Minneapolis on Election Day. You can ask to be assigned as close to home as possible or agree to work anywhere in the city you are needed. Most polling places are located in facilities such as parks, schools, churches, or large apartment buildings accessible to public transportation.
How much does it pay? You can choose to volunteer be paid. The current pay rate is $17.15 an hour. You’ll need to complete an IRS W-4 form, including your social security number, in order to be paid. Election judge paychecks are sent out about a month following Election Day.
