Special Primary Election today

It’s Election Day! Polls in the 35 precincts involved in this special election opened at 7 a.m. and will remain open through 8 p.m. All precincts have reported to Minneapolis Elections headquarters that they are open and ready to serve voters. There are six candidates vying to fill the unexpired term for the Hennepin County Commission District 3 seat vacated by former Commissioner Gail Dorfman; they include:

  • Anne Mavity
  • Bob Reuer
  • Ben Schweigert
  • Bob Carney, Jr.
  • Ken Kelash
  • Marion Greene

As of January 14, there were a total of 77,000 registered voters in these 35 precincts.

At the conclusion of voting today, the City will transmit all precinct-based tabulation results to Hennepin County where those results will be merged with precinct-based results from St. Louis Park and also combined with the results of all absentee ballots. Hennepin County will then submit those cumulative results to the Secretary of State, and the results will be published to the Secretary’s website.

The County canvassing board will meet tomorrow at 11 a.m. to canvass and certify the official results of today’s primary. The special general election for the Third District seat is scheduled for two weeks from today—Tuesday, May 13. At that time, the top two vote-getters in today’s primary will square-off to determine who is elected to complete the unexpired term. The winner will then have the option to file and run (again) as the incumbent in the regularly-scheduled election. The filing deadline for the regularly scheduled election is May 20, and the primary is scheduled for August 12.
