Campaign Sign Information

Minneapolis has an ordinance restricting the placement of lawn signs (Minneapolis Ordinance 543.380). In state and federal election years, this ordinance is overruled by MN Statute 211B.045  from 46 days before the primary until 10 days after the general election, and allows campaign signs to be posted in any size and number.

2017 is not a state and federal election year, therefore city ordinance applies, with its key points being:

  • Size: a maximum of eight square feet of signage shall be permitted per street frontage of residential property.
  • Number of signs: no limit within size allocation.
  • Timing: signs must be removed within 10 days after the general election.

In addition to state law and city ordinances, the city will take action regarding signs when necessary to:

  • Promote life safety
  • Assure traffic visibility
  • Prevent traffic obstruction
