School Board
Minneapolis Board of Education
The Minneapolis Board of Education (School Board) is the elected body that governs Special School District No. 1 (Minneapolis Public Schools). It oversees the district’s budget and policies, and is responsible for selecting and evaluating the superintendent who manages all district operations.
Board Composition and Meetings
- Nine directors are elected to serve four-year terms. Six represent geographic districts (aligned with Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board districts) and three are elected at-large, representing the entire city.
- Terms are staggered, and elections are held during even-numbered years. Terms begin the first Monday in January following the November election.
- Directors participate in approximately three board meetings per month, two as a full board and one committee meeting. These typically occur on Tuesday evenings at 1250 West Broadway Ave.
- Seven elected directors each receive $20,000 annually. The chair and vice-chair (selected by the board) receive $22,000 annually.
