Election results timeline
Minneapolis uses ranked choice voting in municipal elections. Here’s the timeline for declaring unofficial winners.
What to expect on election night (November 2)
Offices on the ballot
Initial results appear on the Secretary of State results page in the hours after the polls close (8:00 PM).
If a candidate receives enough first-choice votes to win, we announce the unofficial winner that night. Otherwise, we begin ranked choice voting tabulation for those races the following day.
Ballot questions (charter amendment)
Unofficial results from ballot questions appear on the Secretary of State results page in the hours after the polls close (8:00 PM).
Note: a Minneapolis charter amendment needs at least 51% "Yes” votes in order to pass. See M.S. 410.12 Subd. 4 for more information on these rules.
What to expect the following day (November 3)
In recent years we have finished all tabulation in one day. However, we would continue the process on subsequent days if needed until complete.
