The passing of Senator Kari Dziedzic created a vacancy in Senate District 60. Governor Tim Walz issued a Writ of Special Election to fill this vacancy on December 30, 2024, for a special election held on Tuesday, January 28, 2025.

Voters who live in Senate District 60 (Northeast Minneapolis, Cedar-Riverside, University of Minnesota area) are eligible to vote in the special election.

A Special Primary will be held on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, if more than one candidate files from one of the major political parties.

The candidate filing period ends at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, December 31, 2024. The candidate withdrawal period ends Thursday, January 2, 2025, at 5 p.m.

Early voting options

Vote early

Voters have the option to vote early for the special election, either by mail or in-person.

For those voting by mail, we recommend dropping off your ballot in-person to ensure it is counted. Ballots can be returned to the Elections & Voter Services main office or the Hennepin County Government Center until 8 p.m. on Election Day.

Requesting a ballot by mail

Voters who are on the Permanent Absentee list will automatically be mailed a ballot.

Returning a ballot

Voters can return their mail ballot via USPS in the postage-paid envelope provided in their voting materials. Due to the short timeline, we recommend dropping off your ballot in-person at Minneapolis Elections & Voter Services (980 E Hennepin Ave) or the Hennepin County Elections office (300 S 6th St) during business hours.

Ballots must be returned by 8 p.m. on Election Day in order to be counted.
